LoLz Launched at the London Comic Festival

It was good to see the new all-ages comic LoLz launched at the London Comic Festival last weekend. The new 32 page full colour comic features a variety of comic strips by people such as Nigel Parkinson, Sonia Leong, Matylda McCormack-Sharp, Mike Powell, Sarak Millman and many more - including the return of Derek the Troll in an all new story by me.

In case you're not familiar with the character, I created Derek the Troll 40 years ago and he first appeared in Games Workshop's Warlock magazine before moving over to White Dwarf for a while. A few years ago I published a collection of those strips (now out of print - but may be back in print soon). Then in 2018 I revived Derek for a new full colour serial in the online comic Goof! Sadly the comic stopped before the serial was concluded but, all being well, I will complete and publish it in print next year.

For now though, you can read a new Derek the Troll story in LoLz No.1. How to obtain a copy? Simply go over to The77 website at this link...

https://the77comic.bigcartel.com/product/lolz

LoLz is available with a choice of two covers. One by Matylda McCormack-Sharp, one by S.P. Zero.

This week I'll be drawing my page for the first issue, bringing back Derek the Troll in an all new story in full colour.

Launching from The 77 Publications, LoLz will also feature the talents of Sonia Leong, Nigel Parkinson, Anna Everts, Darren Stephens, S.P. Zero and many more!

Please support this brand new all-ages humour comic. You can find out more at this link:

Derek the Troll returns for the LoLz!

The77 Publications have unleashed their latest Kickstarter, and it's for a brand new humour comic!

LoLz is the name and it'll include all new comic strips by established pros such as Nigel Parkinson and Sonia Leong as well as talented newcomers.

I'm doing a page for it too, featuring a new adventure with an old favourite as Derek the Troll returns again!

I created Derek the Troll 40 years ago for a strip in Warlock magazine published by Games Workshop, and he moved over to their companion mag White Dwarf after Warlock folded. He's popped up in a few places since such as part of the online comic Goof! and a self-published Derek the Troll collection I did several years ago (now out of print).

Set in a fictitious time of ancient history when weird wizards, daft dragons, and permanently-angry barbarians roamed the Earth, Derek the Troll is coming back for an all-ages audience in LoLz No.1 this summer.

LoLz won't be available in newsagents so it's essential that you back the Kickstarter if you want to ensure your copy. You can see a preview of the other contents of this exciting new comic, plus details on how to back issue one, at the following link:

No more Trolls!

A comic I published in 2016, and had a second print in 2018 has now sold out. No more copies of DEREK THE TROLL left I'm afraid, apart from a couple I'll be taking to Macc-Pow! tomorrow.

I don't have the finances to gamble on doing a reprint yet, (as most of you will already have it) but thank you to everyone who bought a copy over the past few years!

One day, depending on health and time, I hope to finish the sequel that was in online comic Goof! and publish that in print as a colour special. Maybe, if the fates allow...

In the meantime though I need to focus my time and energy on mainstream comics work.

Combat Colin and Derek the Troll comics still available

Just a quick blog post today to let you know that I still have some of my comics in stock, but quantities are going down.

There's Derek the Troll (32 pages) which collects all the Derek the Troll strips I did in the 1980s for Games Workshop plus the complete Rock Solid, Space Hero sage from 1985's Swiftsure comic.

Combat Colin Nos.2 and 3 (40 pages each) are still available too, collecting strips from The Transformers weeklies of the late 1980s.

Not available in shops. Only from me via eBay, - and I'll sign each copy iniside too!

DEREK THE TROLL - Last few left!

I'm running low on my stock of the Derek the Troll special and it's unlikely to be reprinted anytime soon. When I restart self-publishing my priorities will be to get a new comic out and the long-awaited Combat Colin No.5. If I do ever reprint Derek the Troll it won't be for a few years yet.

The Derek the Troll comic has 32 pages and collects all the Derek strips I did in the 1980s for Games Workshop's Warlock and White Dwarf magazines.

The second half of the comic reprints the entire saga of Rock Solid, Space Hero that I did for Harrier Comics' Swiftsure way back in 1985. This is a prequel of sorts to my Sgt.Shouty strip that currently runs in The77.

If you've been thinking about buying the comic, now's your chance before they sell out! You can find out more about it in my eBay listing here:

Ignore the trolls... except THIS one!

Derek the Troll
was one of the earliest characters I created for a professional publisher. He appeared back in 1985 in Games Workshop's Warlock magazine before transfering over to White Dwarf after Warlock folded.

A few years ago I collected all of those 1980s Derek the Troll strips into a comic, and I still have a few left if any of you are interested.

The 32 page comic also includes the complete futuristic saga of Rock Solid, Space Hero, another early character of mine, from the pages of Harrier Comics' Swiftsure in the mid-1980s. (And followers of my ongoing Sgt.Shouty strip in The77 might have noticed that it's set ten years after the Rock Solid stories and there is a connection.)

If you haven't bought Derek the Troll yet you can grab one from my eBay listings at this link...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203681666160

While you're there, check out my other items such as the remaining issues of Combat Colin in stock...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/graphite47/m.html?item=203681666160

I'll be selling more original art on eBay soon too!

Secrets of the Lewniverse!

From The77 Annual (2021).

Here's an exclusive reveal for you. In the upcoming The77 Annual, I've done a new two page Sgt.Shouty story, The Origin of Dr.Plank, which I hope today's readers will enjoy...

...and as a special in-joke for those of you who have followed my work for years, it ties into one of my old strips from the 1980s!

Without giving away any spoliers as to how or why it happens, the destruction of Earth took place in my Rock Solid, Space Hero series in Swiftsure comic back in 1985, - and now we'll see it from another perspective in Sgt.Shouty for The77 Annual here in 2021.

From SWIFTSURE No.4 (1985)

I've always liked to connect my strips into one universe, or Lewniverse, whenever I can. Not in a major way that requires people to buy every comic, but just in subtle ways such as the fictional town of Skegpool cropping up in various strips, or when Combat Colin appeared in my Brickman series in Image Comics' Elephantmen. Obviously I can't do it with strips I don't own so you'll never see any Beano characters I've worked on turn up in Derek the Troll

This Rock Solid / Sgt.Shouty connection is only a minor crossover, and Rock Solid himself won't appear in Sgt.Shouty because of what happened to him back in his own series, but as I was doing another series set in the far future it occurred to me to keep in in the same universe.

(and if you DID want to read those old Rock Solid stories they're all reprinted in the Derek the Troll comic I've published.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/graphite47/m.html?item=203554298786

As for The77 Annual, the Kickstarter campaign ends tomorrow (Sunday 17th October) so get in quick if you want to order the exclusive hardback version of the book. Details at this link...

DEREK THE TROLL comic available again!

Gradually restarting the self-publishing side of my business, I'm listing one of my comics for sale again. This is the second printing (2018) of Derek the Troll /Rock Solid, a 32 page comic collecting some of the earliest work I did for professional publishers.

Contents:

All of the Derek the Troll strips that I originally did for Warlock and White Dwarf magazines that were published by Games Workshop in the mid-1980s.

The complete five-part series of Rock Solid, Space Hero that originally appeared in Swiftsure comic published by Harrier in 1985.

As a bonus I'm including two mini-prints featuring Derek the Troll and Combat Colin!

The comic is signed inside by me, and will be bagged and boarded, and posted in a card-backed envelope for protection.

Format is the American size, which tends to be standard for independent comics now. I only have a limited number left, and have listed them on eBay from today at a Buy It Now price of just £6 including postage and packing. Visit this link to see the listing:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203479753334

If this proves successful I'll be selling other items in the months to come. If you don't already have this Derek the Troll comic I hope you'll be interested enough to give it a try! Thanks for your support!

Creating Covers (2015 and 2016)

I found some old photos on a zip drive so I thought you might be interested. I sometimes take photos of my work during production and this is the cover to Brickman Returns in the pencil stage on 5th August 2015 (above)...

...and during inking on 10th August 2015...
It wouldn't have taken me five days to draw the cover so I must have put it aside while I got on with a more pressing deadline. Here's how the published version looked...

A year later, and here's the cover to Derek the Troll during the inking stage on 22nd August 2016...

...and here's how it looked when it was published...

Both Brickman Returns and Derek the Troll are out of print now, and my online shop no longer exists due to MrSite closing down, but I will find a new way of selling my comics later this year. (Possibly using Comicsy.) Combat Colin will take priority though when my self-publishing business is back up running so I've no idea if or when I'll do new printings of Brickman or Derek the Troll. I'll let you know on this blog when the Combat Colin comics will be available again. At the moment I need to prioritise the bit of mainstream work I have as that's what pays the bills so I hope you understand.
