Viz! Daleks! Marvel UK and more in this week's art auction

I've put more of my original artwork up for auction for collectors to obtain. This week there's a Suicidal Syd page from Viz comic from 2009, a Macho Man strip I did for Marvel UK's Secret Wars comic back in 1986, a Captain Scarlet parody written by Kev F and drawn by me from the 1990s, a Daft Dimension strip from Doctor Who Magazine featuring Daleks... PLUS a page by the late great Jimmy Hansen that he drew in 1990 for Buster comic featuring the popular Ricky Rainbow character.

All original hand drawn artwork produced for the comics. Not facsimilies, not prints.

The auctions end on Sunday night (March 16th). All bids are much appreciated.

VIZ, DALEKS, MACHO MAN and more in this week's art auction!

I haven't been well recently so I haven't been earning anything so... here we go with another art auction to pay the bills! I'd have sold these pages anyway eventually but circumstances have speeded things up. I hope some items will be of interest. A nice varied selection of characters here. Please note this is all original art, not prints! Black ink on Bristol Board.

First up, a Suicidal Syd page from Viz comic No.189 from 2009...

More ORIGINAL COMIC ART for sale this week

I've listed six items of my original comic artwork on eBay and the auction runs until Sunday 17th March.

All of these pages were produced for comics ranging from 1985 to more recent times. In chronological order they are...

SNAIL MAN from Marvel UK's Spider-Man comic No.645 (1985). One of my earliest professional comic strips...

MACHO MAN from Marvel UK's Secret Wars comic (1986). A character that only appeared ocassionally. I only did 11 episodes and this is episode three. Bid on this rarity at this link:

Even rarer is DICE MANIC from IPC's OINK! comic (1987). A very short lived character I created who only appeared twice. This is his second and last appearance and the only one in colour. The plastic overlay with the dialogue balloons is also included:

The Saga of MACHO MAN!

The recent news that Marvel USA are producing a new Secret Wars comic series this summer reminded me that back in the 1980s I did some back up strips for Marvel UK's Secret Wars 2 weekly. In those days I was a frequent contributor to Marvel UK's comics, mainly due to editor Richard Starkings who gave me plenty of work.

For Secret Wars 2 I created and submitted a full page comedy superhero strip called Macho Man. There wasn't enough room in the comic's crammed 28 pages to accommodate a full page extra so it was decided the origin story would be split in two halves, and subsequent episodes would be created as half pagers. Macho Man began in Secret Wars 2 No.42 (dated 19th April 1986) accompanied by a warm editorial welcome message...
Due to shortage of space, Macho Man only appeared occasionally, and only had 11 episodes in total. However I've always enjoyed doing superhero spoofs so brief as it was it was always great fun to do. The strip appeared in Secret Wars 2 Nos.42, 44, 51, 52, 53, 58, 63, 67, 69, 75, and 79 (3rd January 1987). Here they are. (As always, click images to enlarge them.)

A printing error with the colour on this one unfortunately.

That wasn't the end of the character though. I've always liked to incorporate the characters I've created into a shared universe so a couple of years later in 1989 Macho Man turned up during the six part Combat Colin story The Place of No Return in Transformers No.245. (Reprinted in 2005's Brickman Begins! as Village of the Doomed.) Here's a segment...
The battle in the village bonded Colin and the other characters as pals so Macho Man returned again in Transformers Nos.270 and 271 during Colin's fight against a mystery villain...

Macho Man returned one final time, in an episode of the Combat Colin serial The Invasion of Megabrain (Transformers No.296, November 17th, 1990) where he met his fate...
Yep, I killed off one of my characters. Permanently! In a Marvel comic! Never to return.

...and that was the short career of Norman Dribble AKA Macho Man. I hope you've enjoyed it.

Combat Colin vs... Doctor Doom!?!

Back when Combat Colin was a regular strip in Marvel UK's Transformers weekly there were a few occasions when he met characters from the Marvel Universe. And why not? He was, at that time, a Marvel character and therefore part of that universe... at least as far as I was concerned. (A million Marvelites may disagree.) The story guest-stars another character of mine, - Macho Man, - who had previously appeared in his own strip in Marvel UK's Secret Wars comic.

Anyway, I thought it'd be fun to have Colin meet one of Marvel's super-villains, - no less than Doctor Doom! Here's the two parter that featured that brief encounter, from Transformers No.270 (19th May 1990) and No.271 (26th May 1990).

And in panel three of that first part (above), you may notice that I drew a Desperate-looking character with massive arms and tiny legs nearly 20 years before a certain comic cowboy's revamp. Spooky coincidence!

After Colin's adventures concluded a year or so later, Marvel UK gave me the rights to the character, so these days he's not part of the Marvel Universe. He's now part of the Lewniverse.

Um... okay. Maybe I'll call it something less egotistical.
