PEDANTIC STAN goes international!

Back in 2021, writer John Freeman and I had the honour of reviving our Pedantic Stan character for The Most Important Comic Book on Earth: Stories to Save the World! Don't worry, that's not hyperbole. It was the actual name of the book!

An anthology masterminded by Paul Goodenough of Rewriting Earth (formerly Rewriting Extinction) to help raise awareness of our environment, the 344 page book gathered together new contributions from comics creators, musicians, writers, celebrities, and of course envirinmentalists, all contributing for free, to get the message across in an accessable and engaging way. 

Well, now there's a German edition too, with all the stories translated maintaining the same high standard design of the English edition, plus this time it has a larger page size and is in hardback! It really is an impressive production.

 

Only problem was, I'd killed off Pedantic Stan in his previous story, so for this new one-off, John wrote a script where Stan returned as a zombie! His thirst for comics luring him from the grave.

Our story The Return of Pedantic Stan the Comics Fan has become Die Rückkeur von Stan, Dem Pedantischen Comic-Fan! The character will probably be brand new for most German readers as Stan had only previously appeared in the UK fanzine Speakasy in the 1990s and my self-published Pedantic Stan collection a few years ago but I hope they enjoy his page. 

 

The Most Important Comic Book on Earth contains a multitude of stories from a vast number of people and is still available, dead cheap at only £7.99, from Amazon. (But ask your local comic shop or bookshop if they have it in stock first. Support them before checking Amazon.)

COMBAT COLIN No.4 and PEDANTIC STAN - Back in print in time for NICE Comic Con!

New printings of Combat Colin No.4 and Pedantic Stan The Comic Fan will be available to buy from my table at Bedford Comic Con (NICE) this weekend! 

Originally published in 2019, Combat Colin No.4 won the Comic Scene Award for Best Small Press / Independent Comic that year. 

It has 32 pages (28 interior black and white plus four full colour cover pages) reprinting my Combat Colin strips from February 1990 to August 1990 that originally appeared in Marvel UK's Transformers comic. (Marvel returned the rights to the strip back to me in the Nineties.)

 

Pedantic Stan The Comic Fan is the creation of John Freeman and Lew Stringer and the strip ran in Speakeasy magazine in 1990/91. All of those strips are collected in this edition, a 16 page A5 size landscape comic, along with a special strip I did for the UKCAC 1990 convention book. This new edition has a different colour cover (gradient red instead of blue) and a new editorial. (The first printing appeared in 2018.)

Pedantic Stan reflects the comic fan of the 1990s, in that he's a superhero-obsessed fanboy with a bulging rucksack full of back issues and a wants list a mile long. (May be a slight exaggeration for comic effect.) Scripts were written by John Freeman and drawn by me, although I wrote some myself such as the Christmas episode and the UKCAC episode.

Pedantic Stan - SOLD OUT!

The remaining 20 copies of Pedantic Stan that I put on eBay yesterday have sold out within 24 hours. My thanks to those of you who bought them. They'll be posted out Saturday and Monday first class.

I will do a reprint one day but not yet as I need to reserve funds for other things such as a reprint of Combat Colin No.1. 

At the moment though I need to focus on other comics work and some private commissions. It's going to be a busy month!

PEDANTIC STAN returns in THE MOST IMPORTANT COMIC BOOK ON EARTH!

I feel very proud and privileged to be part of this book, The Most Important Comic Book on Earth. A mighty 350 page softback out now, to raise awareness of environmental issues. PEDANTIC STAN comes to the London Film and Comic Con

Comics fandom is a far more diverse community than it was 30 years ago. Back in 1990 conventions were solely populated by pale young men in anoraks with rucksacks bulging with back issues. Well, that's not strictly true, but it was a humourous basis for Pedantic Stan, The Comics Fan, - a strip that John Freeman and I created for Speakeasy, the top comics news magazine of the time. 

Now, all of those strips (plus a special one I did for the UKCAC 1990 convention book) have been collected in a mini-comic that I'll be debuting at the London Film and Comic Con this weekend. (It'll also be available to buy from my website next week, after the convention.) It's 16 pages, A5 landscape, and costs £2.00 at the event.

LFCC tales place over three full days; Friday 27th July until Sunday 29th July, at the huge Olympia venue. You'll find me at table 29 on the first floor in the comics section. as well as Pedantic Stan, I'll also be bringing along my other comics, Combat Colin, Derek the Troll, and Brickman, as well as drawing sketches, so drop by and say hello.

Panel discussions:
The schedule so far is that I'll be on a panel on Friday afternoon at 2.00PM called Creating Worlds For Children, with Jess Bradley, Yasmin Sheikh, Grant Perkins, and Emily McGorman-Bruce. 


Then on Sunday, at 4.00PM, I'll be on a panel celebrating 80 years of The Beano with Nigel Parkinson, Emily McGorman-Bruce, and Danny Pearson.

Pedantic Stan, Comics Fan!

Back in the late 1980s I worked with John Freeman on a strip called Pedantic Stan, the Comics Fan for Speakeasy fanzine. John came up with the character, and had originally called him Captain Pedant, but I felt that Pedantic Stan suited him better so we agreed to call him that. John wrote the scripts, and I drew it. The strip didn't run for long, but I think it'll be due a revival one day soon. 

The page above was created for the UKCAC 1990 convention booklet. For this one, I did the script as well as the art. This was set in the days when comic cons were dominated by lads with rucksacks full of comics. Times have changed for the better!

Hopefully next year, when I've found all the original strips, I'll self-publish a little comic collecting them all along with other bits and bobs. Watch this space!
