TFUKCON for 2024!

Certainly an eye-catching acronym, TFUKCON stands for Transformers UK Convention, and I've been invited to be a guest there next year. Saturday 11th May at the Strathallan Hotel, Birmingham. See the link for more info...

I'm looking forward to meeting readers who grew up on The Transformers comic of the 1980s that read my Robo-Capers and Combat Colin strips!

They've also produced a little video announcement:

well.. good luck with that.. that.. erm.. poster is kinda wrong.. it's not the 40th birthday.. it's the 40th Anniversary of the release.. 41st Birthday (when you are born is your first birthday. after a year, it's your first Anniversary of your birth, when you are '1' years old. that's your second birthday..

of course.. if you wanna go into all the EARLY stuff, like the three pitches which people like Jim Shooter worked on before he was one of the main ones behind the final 'Transformers'.. gonna add some time.. if you wanna include some of the toys.. well.. transformers was a re-issue of them ^_^ If i was being pedantic.. I might comment about the fact that Megatron is kinda from 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' as he was based on the Walther P-39 U.N.C.L.E. version.. but I'm not that pedantic... in causal places..

If you celebrate your birthday like that I think you're the only person who does, Ryan. The Transformers began in 1984 so 2024 is the 40th birthday of the franchise. I was born in 1959 so my 40th was in 1999. That's how anniversaries are calculated!

I can't be the only programmer with interest in Math (which you kinda need to be a decent programmer) to know how numbers work?

but like I said, Anniversary would make it 40 since the first mainstream release (cause revels, test market sales etc, don't seam to count) but it wouldn't be the 40th Birthday (birthdays are a certain sub-class of anniversary. Numbers all start from 0. 0 is a very important number.

So according to your "math" everyone has been celebrating birthdays wrong all their lives? Sorry, Ryan, you're mistaken on this. Yes, the point of origin is the only "birth day" but, come on, it's just a turn of phrase that everyone in the whole world calls each anniversary of that date their birthday.

There's more important things in life to worry about.

We’ve definitely got the dates right. I can assure you that!

Thanks for doing this for us Lew

Please, please go outside and take in some fresh air.

For the love of humanity maybe touch some grass while you're there? Strike up a conversation with another human being.

Oh, I'm not worrying. If I worried about misuse of maths and the English language, I wouldn't make it through the day and I would write a letter to a local shop that thinks 'colour' is spelt 'color' or that Gaol is spelt 'Jail'..

I don't know enough people to define everybody but.. I'm trying to remember anyone who have said that when they are say, 40, that is there 40th birthday... mostly seams to be 'How old", "I'm 40 years".. or cards that just say "You are 40 today" (though I'm not going into the paradox of leap years and calendar drift. But I don't really pay attention to social slang usage this days.. not worth the effort.. trying to figure out when 'bad' means good is just too both bother.. language is fluid. Math and logic aren't, so i'll stick with them ^_^

You're in the UK aren't you, Manic? It's "maths", not "math".

Out of interest are you going to attend this convention?

If you are I might give it a miss.

point about Maths.. really, I should be using the full 'mathematics', though the meaning is.. tricky until around 300BC I think...

I only meant it in a more light hearted way of pointing out correct usage over common usage. I prefer correct as words shape ideas and are very powerful. There is a reason they say the Pen is mightier then the sword.

and no. I can't go to the convention. mostly for reasons I don't like to go into in public because too many people use such things as an excuse for their actions more then something you need to fight against. It's like my Dyslexia, I got very little to no help at school and had to work twice as hard to be even close to equal with people who just couldn't be bothered to do things right anyway. Dyslexia is not an excuse. It's a challenge you need to make up for.
