Through the Keyhole

We're only at the tail end of the summer of 2013 but myself and a load of other cartoonists are already feverishly working away on the annuals that will be out in 12 months time. Here's a snapshot of the pencil version of the opening to a Keyhole Kate page I'm drawing for The Dandy Annual 2015. Lettering, inking, and colouring to do next. It's all go!

Lew , I don't know if you've heard of SFX magazine but they recently had an article on Beano annuals. One of the SFX team wrote about his collection of Beano annuals going back to 1972 and said how he looks forward to the latest one every year. Even people who've long since stopped getting the comic have a fondness for the annuals - a link with childhood Christmases perhaps but there's something special about annuals.

Yes, I've been reading SFX on and off since it started but I didn't see that one. Odd they'd put it in SFX though and not their companion mag Comic Heroes.

I get Comic Heroes too, it's always a must-read but I wish they'd kept the letters page - they had one in the first few issues then stopped it. In SFX the letters page is always the first thing I read.

Yes, strange there's no letters page. Perhaps they don't receive many letters?

Lew, out of interest how long does it normally take for you to complete a page from start to finish including colouring, lettering?

Depends on a number of things; how much work is involved, familiarizing myself with characters, etc. The page shown here is already completed and was sent to DC Thomson on Monday night.

Without interruption, I'd say on average a day and a half for pencils/inks/lettering/colouring.

As for coming up with the script, that can take forever in some cases! :)
