Lawless interview from 2022

I'd forgotten about this until Joanne Alexander posted it on Facebook today. An interview she conducted with me at the Lawless Comic Con in Bristol back in 2022. Click on the link below to see the video...

Daleks: The Ultimate Guide!

Just in time for Christmas, Panini UK have published an impressive slipcased 224 page Doctor Who bookazine called Daleks: The Ultimate Guide which covers everything you need to know about 60 years of Dalek history on TV, in comics, toys, movies, books, and beyond. And there's even an interview with me in there regarding my regular Daft Dimension comic strip.

As a lifelong fan of the Daleks it's a privilege to be a small part of this bumper volume of facts, features, and photos. Edited by Marcus Hearn, who certainly knows his stuff, this slipcased bookazine should soon be available in WH Smiths or you can order it directly from the pubishers at this link:

Meanwhile... an interview from September

When I was at the Meanwhile comics festival in Coventry on September 18th I was interviewed by students at Coventry University about my career. They've edited out all their questions so it's just me waffling on for ten minutes but if you'd like to watch it you'll find it on their YouTube channel at this link...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1viyeyUR_4Y

Lots of other comics people were interviewed that day too, including Rachael Smith, Marc Jackson, Sonia Leong and more. You can see them at this link...

New interview on YouTube

Screen grab ©Leonard Sultana.

I did three video interviews last Saturday at the Meanwhile in Coventry festival. Here's one of them on Leonard Sultana's YouTube channel. After 18 months of barely seeing anyone my voice was wearing a bit thin after talking all day but I hope it comes across ok....

Thanks to Leonard for the interview. Don't forget to like and subscribe to his channel to see more interviews he posts with other comics people in the future!

New interview about HAM DARE!

Art by Malcolm Douglas from a script by Lew Stringer.

I was recently interviewed for Spaceship Away magazine, the comic dedicated to Dan Dare and other space heroes of the 1950s. The reason being that back in 1986 I wrote a Dan Dare spoof serial for Oink! comic entitled Ham Dare, Pig of the Future

Ham Dare was illustrated by the brilliant Malcolm Douglas (using his alias J.T. Dogg) and he accomplished wonders with it. I was lucky to have him drawing my script.

You can find out more about the background to Ham Dare (and other Dan Dare parodies) in Spaceship Away No.53, available to buy from this link:

http://spaceshipaway.org/

The interview is part of a six page feature called The Fake Dan Dare Syndrome by Andrew Darlington which also includes other Dan Dare spoofs and related strips such as Danny Dare from Wham!. The article mentions that my Ham Dare plot bears a passing resemblance to the 1957 novel Wolfbane by Frederik Pohl.... which came as a surprise to me because I'd never even heard of that book until now!

Spaceship Away features brand new stories of the original Dan Dare along with colour reprints of Jeff Hawke and other material. There's also a tribute to the marvellous artist Don Harley who passed away in January.

If you want to know more about Oink! comic, be sure to check out the Oink! Blog run by Phil Boyce: https://oink.blog/

Listen up! Here's a new podcast interview

In the unavoidable absence of comic cons we've seen an increase in comics podcasts about the world of comics. A few weeks ago I was interviewed via Zoom about my life and career by Shane Chebsey for his ICE-CAST and it's now uploaded onto his site if you want to listen to it. Runs for slightly over an hour...

New interview in VWORP! VWORP!

It humbly calls itself a fanzine but this wonderful publication is easily on a par with High Street magazines in terms of design and its quality of writing. Vworp! Vworp! is devoted to covering the history of Doctor Who Magazine, and as the latter has been around for 41 years there's a lot of insider knowledge to unearth. Vworp! Vworp! manages that admirably by interviewing as many peopole involved with DWM as it can, including editors, artists, writers, and more.
The latest edition is a combined and updated version of volumes 1 and 2 in a sumptous 196 page full colour softback book. Vworp! Vworp! isn't published very often (it's been three years since Vol.3 was released) but that's ok because there's so much in the books that they'll take you ages to read anyway!

Vworp! Vworp! Volumes One and Two Collected includes interviews with Dave Gibbons, Mike McMahon, Adrian Salmon, Tim Quinn, Dez Skinn, the late Steve Dillon, and many more, plus a new interview with me. The interview also shows you one of my original Daft Dimension scripts and the inked and coloured version of the artwork.
Even putting personal input aside, I can't reccommend Vworp! Vworp! enough. If you like Doctor Who comics, or comics history in general, this is for you!  It's a chunky publication and it comes at a chunkly price (£15.99) but for a 196 page A4 sized book on quality paper that's a good price.

Macc-Pow! Podcast

Myself and several other comics people were interviewed at Macc-Pow! the other week, and the podcast is now up for you to listen to if you wish. Sound quality deviates in places as it took place in a crowded Town Hall. My bit starts about 40 minutes in, but listen to the whole programme to hear everyone else...

In the news

I was recently interviewed by The Independent on my thoughts about the current state of children's comics in newsagents. Fellow comics creator Jamie Smart was also interviewed, along with others, and the emphasis is most definitely on The Phoenix. I did manage to plug a few other titles too though for balance. You can read the article at The Independent's website here:
