The day SPECKY HECTOR appeared in Battle

Specky Hector was a character I created 40 years ago for a one-off strip in Oink! comic. He also turned up in the background or cameo roles in a couple of my other strips there too. He then made a return in the 1990s in Buster, hosting Specky Hector's History of Comics, a short series that appeared there every few weeks.

Cut to many years later, in 2020, and Rebellion were putting together an all new Battle special. Editor Keith Richardson asked me if I had a humour strip I could contribute and I suggested ol' Specky. I coloured the strip and I was very pround to be part of that excellent publication. 

I thought you might like to see the strip (above). A couple of friends of mine now own the original artwork.   

Into BATTLE with Specky Hector!

One comic I never expected to contribute to was Battle, not least because it ended in 1988 and rarely featured any humour strips. Now Rebellion have revived it for a new one-off special and there's a Specky Hector, Comics Collector strip in there by me leading off an impressive package of contents from today's top talents such as Garth Ennis, Keith Burns, Simon Coleby, Staz Johnson, Alex DeCampi, Glenn Fabry, Tom Paterson and more. 

The Specky strip is an old one of mine that appeared in black and white in Oink! in 1986 but I've digitally remastered it and coloured it for a new generation.

The 100 page Battle Special is out this Wednesday from comic shops and selected newsagents! The red logo is the standard cover for shops. Purple logo an exclusive from the Rebellion website.

BATTLE returns this September!

Rebellion have revealed some info about another of their 2020 Specials and this one is a 100 page giant! Here's the PR:

"Unveiling the cover by Nelson Daniel for the BATTLE Special - out 19 September with 100 pages marking the anniversary of the Battle of Britain, with brand new work by Garth Ennis, Rob Williams, Alan Hebden, Alex De Campi, Dan Abnett, Alan Grant, Karl Stock, Keith Burns, PJ Holden, Brett McKee, Staz Johnson, Jimmy Broxton, Glenn Fabry, and Tom Paterson!"

Why am I mentioning this on my art blog? Well, although it's not listed in the PR above, I have a four panel mini-strip in there as light relief to the wartime dramatics. Although the rest of the comic is all-new, my contribution is an old strip from the 1980s that I thought would be appropriate, so I dusted it off, remastered and coloured it. I won't say which strip it is yet (not Combat Colin) but you'll find out in September! I'm very proud to be in a comic alongside such industry giants!
