New strips a'comin'!

I've just had my proposals for two brand new mini-strip series approved for The Beano and they should start in the comic sometime in October or November. I can't reveal any more about them yet but they're all-new strips, not revivals of old characters. They're likely to have short runs of six weeks or so as The Beano likes to keep things fresh these days. Two episodes are already drawn (there's one masked out above) and I'm looking forward to setting to work on the rest. More news soon!

    1. The Bone Ranger is by Steve Beckett, not by me. My strips won't appear until October or November.

    2. Cool. Nice one Steve! Lew did you draw Word on the Street in this weeks? Calamity James?

    3. No. As I said, my strips won't appear until October or November. I have nothing in The Beano until then. I've been busy drawing several ages for the annuals.

  2. Can't wait till the newspapers get to heard of this.. remember last time with Postman prat? I can see it all now.. 'New Strip: Top Secret by Lew Stringer features kids who do things in the dark'

^_^ while i'm not a current Beano reader (which reminds me.. I need to figure out who wrote and draw an old long dennis the menace story called 'The Birthday party' or something which had a bunch of fellow child stars of the beano round dennis' house for a party.. great writing, great art but I didn't recognise the style) anyway.. While I'm not a current beano reader, I see the idea of keeping things fresh but I'm not sure that's the same as new stuff all the time, more then keeping doing new things with the character.. no offense to anyone, but there does seam to be many new 'hit' characters like the past with Dennis, Big Eggo, Biffo, Korky, Pocket Grandfather (in various version.. like BBC's version maybe..).. of course, they weren't all named ones etc, but still

    1. I read that birthday story not too long ago. There's a signature on the first page - 'Mike Pearse'.

    2. I'm an idiot.. how did I miss that?!? I just checked.. Mike Pearse mostly did the 3 Bears and bash street I think.. apart from Ballboy acting a little too nasty at one point then I know the character to be, that was fantastic art and story.. the only problem was right near the end... the Dandy guys turn up, oh and of course the standard 'lets through in some famous people while we are at it'.. sorry, I know I've said about this before but.. the odd appearance fine, for a comic based on that kinda thing like Radio Fun fine, but beano and dandy? not really my taste.

surprising the story was as late as 2001..

  4. Manic Man, the grandfather story you refer to is Peter's Pocket Grandpa, which like Korky is from the Dandy. I agree that Cbeebies' Grandpa in My Pocket is very similar!

The short run thing is a good idea. It's tried and tested, that's how The Three Bears started out in 1959. They had a four week run, and came back by popular demand a year later. Same thing applies now. They can try out lots of ideas, and if something gets plenty of positive feedback, it can come back for another run. If not, they aren't wasting a page for months on an unpopular strip.

    1. ah, problem is, it was first a series of text stories, then later, given a new name as a comic version was made.. I couldn't remember then name of both of them ^_^

I can see your point, short runs have been tried in the past, but I felt too many strips weren't really given a chance, and it seams in all field, public feedback is a bit lacking at times (though I know, US animation in the 80s, it was in fact almost unheard of for a tv show to get fan mail.. wasn't until the 90s that it really starting happening)

  5. Congratulations Lew! I can't wait to see your upcoming stories! :)

  6. This is pleasing news. I was considering dropping Beano if it was lacking in Stringer magic for any length of time.
